In a significant shift within the aviation sector, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest airport, based on passenger traffic for the month of July. Istanbul Airport welcomed 8.15 million passengers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change marks a notable development in European air travel dynamics.
Heathrow’s passenger numbers have decreased by 1.5% compared to July of the previous year, a decline partly linked to disruptions arising from the ongoing Middle East conflict. In contrast, Istanbul Airport experienced a 2.3% increase in passenger traffic. This shift has intensified calls for the UK government to move forward with Heathrow’s proposed third runway, a £33 billion project aimed at expanding the airport’s capacity to accommodate 150 million passengers annually.
Heathrow officials argue that the current figures underscore the necessity for additional capacity to bolster the UK’s position in international connectivity, trade, and tourism. The airport is currently operating at near full capacity with its two runways, highlighting the urgency for expansion to meet growing demand and maintain competitive standing.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport benefits from a larger site and uninterrupted operations, with three runways currently in use and a fourth slated to begin service by the end of 2026. This operational advantage positions it well to handle increased passenger volumes, contributing to its rise in the rankings.
While Heathrow faces capacity challenges, other UK airports such as London Stansted and Manchester have reported their busiest July on record. London Stansted managed 3.1 million passengers, whereas Manchester handled 3.4 million, indicating a robust demand for air travel within the UK, despite Heathrow’s current constraints.
